What to Bring
Trip Prep: What to Bring & Expect
To ensure you have the best possible experience on the water, we’ve put together this guide to help you prepare for your trip with Big Chubs Charter Co.
1. The Essentials
Valid Michigan Fishing License: Required for all anglers ages 17 and older. You can purchase these easily online at the Michigan DNR website.
Ontario License (Detroit River Only): If we plan to cross into Canadian waters for the best bite, you will need an Ontario One-Day License. We recommend purchasing this the evening before your trip once we confirm the weather and game plan. Ontario License Website.
A Large Cooler: Leave this in your vehicle! We will clean and bag your fish at the dock, but you’ll need a cooler with ice to transport your catch home safely.
2. Dress for Success (The 10-Degree Rule)
It is almost always 10–15 degrees cooler on the open water than it is at the dock.
Layer Up: Even on warm summer days, mornings can be chilly. Bring a sweatshirt or light jacket that you can shed as the day warms up.
Rain Gear: We fish in the rain! A high-quality waterproof jacket and bibs are highly recommended if the forecast looks damp.
Footwear: Please wear non-marking, rubber-soled shoes (like sneakers or deck shoes). Avoid work boots or black-soled boots that can scuff the boat's deck.
3. Personal Items & Comfort
Sun Protection: Reflection off the water intensifies UV rays. Bring polarized sunglasses, a brimmed hat, and sunscreen (lotion is preferred over spray to keep the boat deck safe).
Motion Sickness: If you are prone to seasickness, we recommend taking a non-drowsy remedy (like Dramamine) the night before and an hour before boarding.
Food & Drinks: Bring a small personal cooler with your choice of snacks and non-glass beverages. Water is always a good idea!
4. What NOT to Bring
Prohibited Items: For the safety of everyone on board and to comply with Coast Guard regulations, alcohol, drugs, and firearms are strictly prohibited.
No Bananas: It’s an old captain’s superstition—let’s not tempt fate! Leave the bananas at the dock.
